Elected Illinois Officials Invited to Local Government Seminar

April 11, 2011

The Crystal Lake-based law firm of Zukowski, Rogers, Flood & McArdle invites all newly elected officers – as well as administrators, managers and long-standing elected officials – to a half-day seminar on the ABCs of Illinois local government. The event takes place on Saturday, April 30, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The seminar aims to give newly elected officials a jump start and seasoned officers a refresher on the fundamentals of local government law, duties and procedures. It will provide the basic tools to help attendees carry out the goals and objectives of an effective elected or appointed official.

Among the topics discussed will be the Illinois “sunshine laws” – the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Illinois Open Meetings Act (OMA). Other subjects include meeting practice and procedures, contracts, ethics and conflicts of interest rules, personnel, land use, finance and budget, and practical skills to increase effectiveness.

A team of municipal lawyers from Zukowski, Rogers, Flood & McArdle will be available to field questions, and a representative from the McHenry County Council of Governments will discuss the organization’s work. Registration and coffee for the April 30 event begins at 8 a.m. A lunch follows at 1 p.m. To reserve a place at the seminar, please telephone Josie Dooley at (815) 459-2050.

All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Congratulations! You’ve Been Elected: Now What Do You Do? A useful resource and a handbook for new and experienced officials, the book published by the Illinois Municipal League is now in its second edition. Its authors are Richard G. Flood and Ruth Alderman Schlossberg of ZRFM, the largest law firm in McHenry County, Illinois.
